As summer settles in, there’s a particular gift that comes with it: breathing room. Kids find rhythm in their days, and parents get space to think beyond the immediate.
This time of year always gives me a chance to reflect. Through some of my personal involvement in the Elmhurst community, I’ve had a front-row seat to the impact thoughtful planning can have, not just for today, but for years down the road. One of the most meaningful efforts I observed this past year was the decision to strengthen a long-term endowment that helps children in Elmhurst’s School District (D205). It’s the kind of work that doesn’t show up overnight, but over time has the potential to support future generations.
There’s a parallel here that’s worth considering as families look ahead. The same principle that strengthens something over time can help shape a child’s future. Time and compounding are powerful allies. Whether it’s a 529 education savings plan, an IRA for a working teenager, an ABLE account for a child with special needs, or a trust account, these are not complex or out of reach. They are tools that, when used consistently, can quietly build opportunity.
As a parent of two children in D205, I know this isn’t abstract. It’s personal. It’s about making sure that when your child steps into adulthood, they have choices. It’s about independence, dignity, and the ability to move forward with confidence.
Small, consistent contributions have historically compounded over time, potentially creating meaningful flexibility down the road. And real independence often comes down to having options.
That’s not just sound financial planning.
That’s sound parenting.
